Vid Šketa Trio

Friday, July 11th

7pm-9pm

Line up:

Vid Šketa, trumpet

Nathan Francis, double bass

Aleksi Heinola, drums

The trio consists of three friends and musicians who share their music ideals. They play a lot together in various settings and bands, as well as have appeared together on several records. Their music is inspired by various jazz musicians, such as Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Dorham and Sam Jones.

Vid Šketa is a jazz trumpet player born and raised in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Having begun his studies at the Ljubljana Conservatory, he is currently finishing his Master's degree at the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki. Among his teachers are Jukkis Uotila, Manuel Dunkel, Joe Magnarelli, Bryan Davis, Philip Dizack and Igor Matkovic.

Vid has been actively performing around the continent for the past several years with groups including the Dmitry Baevsky Quintet, Shimon Gambourg Quintet, UMO Jazz Orchestra and Paul Morvan Quintet. He has appeared at the April Jazz Festival, Blue Motte Festival, Jazz Festival Ljubljana, Pori Jazz Festival, Poorvo Jazz Festival and other similar events.

As a leader of his own quintet, featuring Dmitry Baevsky and Yves Broqui, he has been regularly appearing at the Duc des Lombards in Paris. Up until the present, Vid has appeared on a number of records, including Shimon Gambourg's 'New Arrival' (Silk&Sound), Nathan Francis's 'The House That Bobby Built' (ajabu!) and Olli Virtanen's 'Yellow Light, Go!' (Bopcat).

Vid's debut record was released in early 2024, featuring Aleksi Heinola and Mikael Jakobsson, entitled 'First Step' (ajabu!).

Nathan Francis has charted an extraordinary path in the jazz world, deeply influenced by his experiences living and working in both the United States and Finland. This international perspective brings a unique richness to his music, blending diverse cultural elements and styles from across the spectrum of improvised music.

Nathan's formal education began in Portland, Oregon where he absorbed and thrived in a celebrated music community. He continued on to study at Portland State University, The San Francisco Conservatory, and ultimately graduated from the prestigious Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki, where he earned a degree in Jazz Studies. This solid academic foundation set the stage for an already prolific career, marked by the recording of three albums under his own name and performances with numerous celebrated jazz musicians such as Randy Weston, Larry Willis, Peter Bernstein, Seamus Blake, George Colligan, Alan Jones, and Benny Benack among others.

Aleksi Heinola is a Finnish jazz drummer, based in New York where he regularly performs with various groups. During his career he has played with many master jazz musicians. David Hazeltine, Nat Reeves, Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein, Seamus Blake and Daniel Franck are some of them. He has two records under his name, as well as appears on many others.
